Mid-South Retail Blog Mailbag // Tanger Outlets Update

Hey everyone! If you're in the area, then you well know that Tanger Outlets Southaven held its grand opening today. That means that my store listing is now finalized: you can visit it here if you like.

Tanger held a private preview by invitation only last night: that's where my parents got the snazzy Tanger Outlet branded bag pictured above. As cool as it is, it holds no use for the blog as such...

...but it works darn well as the blog's mailbag! Remember, if you go to the outlets or any other retail spot in the Mid-South, please feel free to send any of your photos, stories, or both regarding that location to midsouthretailblog@gmail.com. I will compile what you send into a post (of course you could write the entire post yourself, if you want!) and stick it up here on the blog as soon as I am able.

Anyway, with that out of the way, I'd like to take the rest of this particular post to just kinda wrap up the Tanger situation. We've been anticipating this all year, and even now that it's here, there's still a lot left to do, as I covered in detail in the post linked to earlier. For now, let me leave you with the above parting shot taken at the event last night, and redirect you once more to l_dawg2000 and Memphis Retail's respective Tanger Outlets Southaven albums, both laden with photos from today's grand opening, as well as this article at the Memphis Business Journal website, featuring a photo tour.

Oh, and be sure to check out the blog once more this weekend for my regularly scheduled post! :)

  1. That bag is definitely much fancier that the reusable grocery bags Publix gives out at their grand openings!

    1. Haha, thanks! And Blogger really needs an edit button on comments 😑

    2. Case in point: that's supposed to be an emoticon!

  2. Hey, we got that bag too, but had to join TangerClub and spend a small fortune to get it! The fee to join was only $10 however, and that gets you a lifetime membership, not too shabby really. I hope the bag was a free gift to those who attended the preview event, and it's *perfect* for the blog mailbag, LoL!

Thanks for the link! Actually, I decided to make an all-new set called "...Grand Opening Day", and relabel the other one "...Countdown to Grand Opening", or something like that! The new set is here: https://flic.kr/s/aHskoM78p5

Some of the "Tanger lowdown" we got today:

Kay Jeweler's will be keeping the Southaven Towne Center location open, per the sales rep we spoke to today.

Rack Room Shoes will be staying at STC as well (too long a story as to how I know this!), but that location is set to become a dreaded clearance store in the future. I don't know, with Rack Room, can you tell the difference really!?

We actually pressed our luck and decided to back and eat dinner over close to STC later, but traffic seemed no worse than any other Friday in that area. At first I noticed the STC Carter's sign wasn't lit up. But on the way back home it was, so hopefully that means it will be staying also, though I didn't drive over to check this for certain.

    1. It was, I think. And haha, thanks!

You're welcome! I'll update the link tomorrow - I also have another link from the MBJ to add.

Cool that you got that info, thanks for sharing! As for Rack Room, wouldn't it make more sense for the clearance store to be at the outlet mall...? :P

  3. Thanks for the link at the last minute update! Glad I could be helpful :)

  4. Oops, meant to post that last comment at the other post! They really do need better editing capabilities here...

    1. It seems like it posted at the correct one! But yes, I agree wholeheartedly. And now I'm about to do a post, which I'm sure will have numerous Blogger issues, after already having to deal with issues on another website, so I'm not too thrilled right now :P

    2. Welp, scratch that: Blogger actually worked 100% smoothly for me today! Certainly nothing to complain about for that :)

  5. Actually, I meant thanks for including the link to my Sunglass Hut photo within the list of Tanger stores, so that should have more correctly been posted at that post! Anyway, I won't try to delete a "Thank You" and repost it there, for fear of making Blogger implode on itself :D And you're welcome (X2, I think :P) for he previous comment at this post!!

Anyway, you would think that about Rack Room, that they would put the clearance store in at Tanger. But in my mind I'm thinking the order, from better to worse, most often goes like this: premier store, prototype store, standard store, factory store, outlet store, then the lowly clearance store (as a last resort), in which case the store location often already has one foot in the grave when it's downgraded that far! Oh yeah, "express store" often falls toward the lower end of that list, but could be anywhere within that lower end of the order, except "clearance store" must always be last, LoL! I mention that because the Toys-R-Us is actually called a "Toys-R-Us Express" at Tanger, in case you want to list it as such on the directory ( I had it wrong on my photo also). As a public service, I tried very hard to break your list (LoL!) elsewhere while going through my photos today, but everything else I looked at was dead on, so good job!

The info about Rack Room comes from someone who came from out of town to help open up the new Rack Room at Tanger. Mrs. l_dawg struck up a conversation with this person while waiting in the very, very, very long line to checkout at the Columbia store. While she was waiting in line, I was able to walk back down and get that info concerning the 2nd Sunglass Hut, plus get several dozen more photos. I got somewhere around 280 pics from yesterday, and that's after weeding out about 40 already! Luckily, I had a little phone recharger with me, and put it to good use yesterday :P

  6. Oh, okay, I understand now! Lol about the Blogger implosion :P And you're welcome, or thanks, or something... I'm confused with all the thanks and welcomes now XD

So it's the we-want-to-keep-this-location-open-except-we-sorta-don't effect! And haha, thanks for that correction! I've gotten all those names from the Tanger website itself, so I think somebody needs to tell them that too! :P

Oh wow, looking forward to seeing all those! I bet they have their own charging stations there too.

  7. Haha, sorry to add to an already confusing situation, I'm good at that XD.

Hopefully they keep the STC Rack Room open, in whatever form they choose to do it. Like we've discussed before, they seem to be nearly on every corner now! I'd forgotten about the one right next door to the Olive Branch Target.

And you're welcome for the correction! When going through my photos today, I was looking at a printed version of the Tanger directory I took a photo of in one of the restroom corridors. They also have that 2nd Sunglass Hut still listed as Sunglass Warehouse. I've got a feeling it'll be a big job keeping all the various directories updated! Hopefully only a few of the tenants leave after Christmas, but some of them did look sort of temporary.

I only saw one charging station table at Tanger, and that one had to be pointed out to me! So it's quite possible they have some more that I didn't see. They don't have them listed on the directory, but they do have an electric vehicle charging station listed :D I would imagine this is mostly for the little electric carts that run around the complex. And the wi-fi was impressively quick most of the time, given there must of been hundreds of people on it, possibly thousands. I got a photo of one of the monster wi-fi antennas I saw hanging up :P Due to the high tech stuff they had at Tanger, the place reminded me of that courthouse mall (on a much larger scale of course) in the Back to the Future III movie (I think it was III, anyway).

I seriously doubt I'll get even 200 photos uploaded of grand opening day! I spent some time going through and picking out some of the ones I thought were better, and have 4 weeks worth of "Tanger Tuesdays" planned. I'm also contemplating a change for next year that will ditch most of the product photos in favor of having an extra photo related to the retail subject of the day instead, so I can potentially "clear the vaults" at least a tiny bit faster anyway!

    1. I agree, I hope most of the stores stay.

I saw that electric car station too! And that WiFi does sound very impressive. Cool comparison!

I'll miss the photo a day, but that sounds like a cool idea! Looking forward to those Tanger Tuesdays :)
