O Kroger, Where Art Thou? - Memphis Metro Listing

Today's post highlights Kroger stores from the Memphis metro, i.e. Shelby County, TN, Tipton County, TN, DeSoto County, MS, and Crittenden County, AR.

Finally, what you've all been waiting for! The Kroger posts have begun. This post, the first in the series (for more information see my other post from today please), is the list of all stores (and their respective décors) in the Memphis metro area, as provided by Kroger.com, with store numbers since added courtesy of an anonymous commenter. Floods, Waves, and a Steady Trickle of Housekeeping

Today's post highlights Alcorn County, MS, retail.

It's a good day to visit the Mid-South Retail Blog!

As you can see, today I have not one, but two posts! (Seems I've made a lot more time for the blog than I first thought.)

More on housekeeping in a moment... first I wanted to talk about what's going on with the Kmart Corp. down in Corinth, MS.

I saw this as part of the briefs in this Sunday's Commercial Appeal, and found a more in-depth article online at the Biloxi Sun-Herald. Back in May 2010, a big flood hit Corinth, and the Fulton Crossing shopping center was extensively damaged, particularly the Big Kmart. Kmart closed for renovations and eventually reopened the following February, sporting a new(ish) outside and inside, which you'll see a few images of throughout this post courtesy of fellow flickr member (and new blog contributor!) l_dawg2000.

The neighboring Kroger store is built in a floodway, and Kmart sued Kroger and the city of Corinth in 2011, claiming that their store got the majority of the floodwaters and subsequent damage as a result. Their case was ultimately dismissed.

Now Kmart is suing Fulton Improvements LLC, owner of the shopping center, alleging that they knew if a flood occurred Kmart would be heavily damaged and yet nothing was done to prevent this. As the article states, "Kmart argues Fulton Improvements failed to install flood gates or protective measures at Kmart. Kmart argued the lack of flood protection measures and the very presence of the Kroger caused Kmart to flood."

For their parts, Fulton Improvements and its attorney maintain "Kmart had no proof, expert or otherwise, that 'any flood protection measure' would have prevented its store from flooding." Kmart and its attorney counter "that the retailer doesn't need an expert 'to explain that a six-foot flood gate could have kept two feet of water out of Kmart's store.'"

The case goes to a fifth circuit panel in New Orleans on April 7th.

There was one commercial I saw the other night that was utterly stupid and therefore downright laughable. It was one of those Kroger faster checkout commercials, and as soon as I can find it online I'll post a link to it. But until then, be on the lookout for it yourselves - you'll know when you see it by those tall inflatable arm-waving things you always see at car dealerships (yep, it's a weird commercial!).

And now back to the housekeeping. As I said, there's two posts today - this one and the Kroger post I've been promising. What I haven't said yet is that this is only the first of ten Kroger posts. As you'll see in the other post, the Kroger list is only for the Memphis metro. I will follow this up ASAP with another Kroger list with other notable Kroger stores around the Mid-South. There are way too many stores around the region, so I've only settled for a definitive list of the three major counties. But if you think there are other worthy stores, please feel free to mention them in the comments of either of today's posts and I'll do my best to include them in the next list post.

After that, the remaining eight Kroger posts will be picture posts of the various Kroger décors that are or once were present around the Mid-South. Again, not really a schedule for those; just check back periodically.

Retail Retell

DeSoto County a retail target... but hopefully not Target (updated)

Today's post highlights DeSoto County, MS, retail.

I know, I know, it's not the Kroger post yet.

But I was totally not expecting this news today or admittedly any time soon, and I think maybe it will surprise you as well.

The Walmart Supercenter planned for Horn Lake, MS, a project in development since December 2013, finally broke ground this morning.

They are now expecting to open this holiday season,  two years after the original announcement.

Walmart's groundbreaking today came just days after another big surge in DeSoto County retail held its own much-publicized groundbreaking. Tanger Outlets on Friday announced several of the stores expected to fill up its highly anticipated mall at the corner of Church and I-55 in Southaven (the remaining stores will be announced over time as deals are made). Tanger, too, is projecting a holiday opening date - November 19th, to be exact, closing years of development.

With the Walmart in Horn Lake and a Gap Outlet store at Tanger now all but finalized, the Walmart Neighborhood Market in Horn Lake and the Gap Outlet just up the street from Tanger's site likely have grim futures. But DeSoto County retail as a whole stands to gain a lot from the two retail juggernauts.

Maybe too much.

It is my personal worry that the Horn Lake Target, which I featured a picture from in my last post, will think the surge of new shoppers deserves a more-modernized Target store to shop at. As I've said, Target currently retains its 90s neon. But the Kroger store in the same center recently ditched its 90s neon. The neighboring OfficeMax has been a victim of the Office DepotMax merger, and Starbucks opted to open a location across the street in an old Mrs. Winner's seeing how Target only has its old Food Avenue Express.

There stands to be much to gain from these two exciting developments, and maybe a couple things to lose.

If Target chooses to gain, I would classify it as a loss.

Retail Retell

EDIT: In harping upon the big changes coming to Horn Lake and Southaven, I realized I completely left out Olive Branch! That area continues to see a lot of growth, including a shopping center including Hobby Lobby, Academy Sports and Outdoors, and Five Below across from Wedgewood Commons (which itself is adding a guitar center next to HomeGoods), as well as continued projects near the new Malco Theatre. Perhaps I neglected to mention it because, after all, it was once the fastest growing city and continues to see retail development as part of the state's fastest growing county.

Also, in other news relating to Tanger, not only is Church Road in the works to be widened, but DeSoto Times reports officials are seeking to construct a cloverleaf interchange at I-55 to help with traffic. Even more road work troubles ahead... how lucky are we? (Get it? Lucky? Because it's a cloverleaf? ...okay, I'll get started on that Kroger post ASAP.)

Welcome to the Mid-South Retail Blog!

Happy St. Patrick's Day 2015!

I opened my flickr account in time for New Year's Day this year. Now I'm launching my blog for St. Patrick's Day, right down to the day and the minute - 3:17 on 3-17. Of course, right now it's barely running at all - if you're reading this on the day it's posted you're way ahead of me! I've got a lot more to do to set this thing up properly - I think it's going to be a never-ending process.

My goal here is not to maintain a daily or even weekly blog - so if that's what you're looking for, this isn't it. Then again, if you were looking for a Mid-South retail blog, I think I'm your de facto choice - still, I apologize for my posting schedule (or lack thereof) in advance. I'll do my best to shoot for monthly posts but I won't guarantee anything one hundred percent. However, you can find me with new uploads every Saturday on flickr. Why does flickr get weekly while you're stuck with maybe-monthly? Simply put, I'm not made for the blogging business - I can't pre-plan to carve out time to type up a thought-out post on a rigid schedule. (And as you can tell when I type, I type a lot.) Rather, much like retail remodels it seems, I'll be doing this on a whim, whenever my time allots. So stick around, or don't. Stop by frequently or annually, I don't care. Makes no difference to me.










...so if I haven't scared you away yet, congratulations! Hope you'll be sticking around for the ride. I don't want to encourage you to check by every day, because I've done that before on blogs that promise frequent uploads, and more often then not I'll get frequent disappointment. By telling you outright I've got other priorities, I think I'll be able to uphold to my standards, and hopefully yours. Who knows, one of the days you stop by you might just get lucky and see a new post! My goal to accomplish on the blog first is a comprehensive list of all the Kroger stores from the Mid-South. If you're from flickr, you've probably seen my photo entitled O Kroger, Where Art Thou?. As a fellow flickr member (and now fellow-blogger!) suggested, I should put my list online rather than have to screenshot it each time. And that's just what I plan to do! Until that's done, don't expect to see much other retail from the area.

Speaking of "lucky," though, as I said earlier, it's St. Patrick's Day! Seeing as how it's a holiday, and considering it is my first blog post, after all, I will leave you with this picture before I get all Kroger-happy - full of green, from my favorite store, the Horn Lake, MS Target, which is stuck in the 90s (much to retail fans' benefit). And to let you know, this photo is exclusive - meaning I won't even upload it to flickr (gasp!) - well, yet, anyway. :)
